The way 50 Cent was on fire in 2003, it seemed that any song he featured on instantly shot up the charts and Lil Kim’s hit “Magic Stick” featuring the Jamaica, Queens, emcee was no different.
Released in April 2003 as the second single fr0m Kim’s album, La Bella Mafia, “Magic Stick” climbed to No 2. on the Billboard Hot 100 only to be held back by Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s smash, “Crazy In Love.”
During a recent interview with Apple Music, 50 revealed the song was actually a throwaway track that didn’t make his earth-shattering Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album and the Diamond Princess herself, Trina, was originally to be featured on the song but she fumbled it.
“Get Rich, it was 20 songs. I had no room for ‘Magic Stick,’ 50 explained. “I wrote that record to intentionally work with Trina. I sent it to Trina and they f—ed up the record. I was like, ‘yo.’ The lyrics and everything was messed up. Gee Roberson heard the record and came and got it from me. He was like, ‘Yo, I need this for Kim. I need it.’ ”
As it turned out, 50 explains, the record ended up being a perfect fit for Kim and what she needed for her album at the time.
“She had made a good record but it didn’t have the formula that Biggie created for her to have success in our culture,” he went on to explain. “It didn’t have the sexuality. It was like, ‘I’ve been gone for a minute now I’m back …’ the record with her and Mr. Cheeks … But ‘Magic Stick’ was spot-on for her.”
