Overview: The 2024 Presidential Election results have normalized the outcome and the promises of Donald J. Trump, who is currently under investigation. Despite the promises of the once and future president, many believe that his threats to abolish agencies and implement mass deportation are just campaign rhetoric. However, the majority of the nation voted for him, which means this is the government they deserve. The article suggests that the power of community over political partisanship must remain a priority, and the importance of building the beloved community cannot be overstated. The article encourages readers to roll up their sleeves and get involved in creating change.

As the dust continues to settle on the results of the 2024 Presidential Election it is hard to come to grips with the normalization of the race’s outcome and the promises of the once and future president, Donald J. Trump,  currently underway by politicians at all levels of government, of course, the so called  corporate elites, even members of the fourth estate.

Certainly, the results are what they are and as disappointing as it is that half of this nation agrees with his totalitarian tendencies–a dictatorial style of government where citizens are required to be completely subservient to the state–this must be the government we deserve but this is what the majority of the nation chose.

Perhaps all of the president’s talk about prosecuting his rivals, was just overheated campaign rhetoric, but perhaps, as many who voted for him believe, he was really speaking his truth. His list of grievances about what ails the country is long and he has promised to abolish agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Education among others; his promise to implement the mass deportation of non citizens; his veiled threats to jail reporters, even teasing about how reporters being shot might be okay with him; the overt threats to shut down broadcasters; as well as promising to increase tariffs, and the list goes on.

“Every one of us, no matter who we are or where we start out, has certain fundamental rights and freedoms that must be respected and upheld.”

V.P. Kamala Harris

Certainly, what happens in the coming year is yet to be seen. In the meantime, there is always work to do. Among us who supported Harris and those who, regardless of who they voted for, actually place the power of community over political partisanship, most, as V. P. Kamala Harris reminded us, continue to be intentional about building community and bringing people together from every walk of life. This must remain a priority regardless of what lies ahead.

If many of Trump’s threats, this time around, fall by the wayside as many did during his previous term as President #45, that will certainly put many minds at ease. And, if the reverse proves to be true, we will be in for a tough four years. But, regardless of what time reveals in this regard, our purpose should remain unchanged–we must continue our efforts to build the beloved community.

Anger, resentment, frustration, apathy, does not serve us as individuals or as a community. One of the most healing things we can do for ourselves and our community is to get involved in helping to create change.

There are so many ways we can help create change. Attend your local city council or board of supervisors meeting and turn in to what is happening locally. Join a nonprofit doing work in your area of interest. Volunteer at your child’s school or your local food bank or local hospital or community.

Harris referred to the election outcome as a turning point. During her concession speech she cautioned, “This is not a time to throw up our hands, before advising supporters, “This is a time to roll up our sleeves.”

I’m rolling mine up. I hope you do too.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
