The CW’s “All-American Homecoming” is currently in its second season.

The show follows Simone’s journey through the fictitious HBCU Bringston University. Simone, played By Geffri Maya, was also a character on “All American.” The creators of the show thought it would be a good idea to center a show around Simone’s character while not only attending college but an HBCU. I don’t think I’ve seen a show with an all-Black cast focusing on their education since a “Different World.”

The show is relatable and touches on many topics affecting college students. And issues that specifically affect Black students at Black colleges and universities. Knowing the impact of this show the cast recently held a screening followed by a Q&A for recent HBCU Alumni focusing on the entertainment industry. We spoke with the cast about the importance of obtaining higher education.

“My personal testimony, my personal story is that I wanted to go to school. I wanted to go to an HBCU,” said Maya. She explains how she wanted to have the experience of being in a place where most of the people look like her, her peers, and her educators.

Attending an HBCU is a wonderful experience that allows you to push yourself and feel comfortable and feel more like home. What’s something people should know about HBCU culture?

“Something that would surprise people about HBCU culture, is people that go to HBCUs tend to be nerds. I think we have a reputation of being party schools and that’s not the case,” said Hans Charles, the DP of the show and a Howard University Alum.

During the Q&A panel, the cast offered advice for the Alumni. Mitchell Edwards’s (Cam Atkins) advice stood out…

He said you have to have the spiritual stamina to endure this industry. Being in entertainment is no easy plight and one will be faced with a lot of rejection. But if you believe in yourself and believe you have the strength to push through until you get your yes – you can succeed in this industry.

“All American Homecoming” airs Monday nights on the CW and catch up on past episodes on the CW’s streaming app.
