This morning, the cast and creative team of American Fiction are celebrating. The satirical film earned nominations in several Academy Award categories, including a nomination for Best Picture. The movie tells the story of an intellectual Black author, played by newly minted Lead Actor nominee Jeffrey Wright, who can’t get another book deal. Frustrated, he pens a book filled with Black stereotypes as a joke, but it becomes a best-seller.
Sterling K. Brown was the first name announced at the nomination ceremony. The This Is Us alum received a Supporting Actor nod for his role in American Fiction. The film’s screenwriter and director, Cord Jefferson, received a nomination for Adapted Screenplay. American Fiction also received a nomination for Original Score.
The Color Purple’s Danielle Brooks received a nod in the supporting actress category for her work as Sofia in the musical movie adaptation. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who has been crushing awards season for her work in The Holdovers, has also been nominated in the category.
Colman Domingo, who brought LGBTQ+ civil activist Bayard Rustin to life in the Rustin-titled Netflix docudrama, has also been recognized in the Lead Actor category.
The 96th Academy Awards will broadcast live on March 10, 2024, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Watch it live at 7 p.m. ET on the ABC Network. You can also stream the ceremony online or on demand.
