The 80th Golden Globe Awards went down Tuesday night and naturally we were rooting for everybody Black! Thankfully a whole host of us were nominated and subsequently took home awards. Here’s a look at the winners.
Quinta Brunson
Brunson, nabbed the Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy award for Abbott Elementary. She was nominated against Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Jenna Ortega(Wednesday)and Jean Smart (Hacks).
“Wow, let me get myself together, okay,” the 33-year-old said as she pulled out her phone to read her acceptance speech. Then, after glancing at it: “Okay, let me skip past my family text messaging.” Brunson wears several hats on the ABC sitcom. Not only does she star in the series, but she also helps write and produce the program she created.
Angela Bassett
The legendary actress won the Globe for best supporting actress in a drama film for her performance as Queen Ramonda in the Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The evening marked Bassett’s second win (and second nomination) at the Globes; she took home the trophy for best actress in a musical or comedy for 1993’s Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It. The win also made her the first actor ever to win a major individual acting award for a movie based on Marvel Comics.
She took the stage and thanked her husband Courtney B. Vance, her cast and late co-star Chadwick Boseman. “We were surrounded each and every day by the light and spirit of Chadwick Boseman. We have joy in knowing that with this historic Black Panther series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to. We showed the world what Black united leadership [looksl like]beyond, behind and in front of the camera.”
Tyler James Williams
The actor nabbed the award for Best Supporting Actor – Television Series for his role in Abbott Elementary. Williams scored his first Golden Globes trophy after competing with John Lithgow, Jonathan Pryce, John Turturro and Henry Winkler in the best supporting TV actor category. The former Disney star received a round of applause from his fellow actors including Eddie Murphy who gave him a standing ovation.
“I pray that this is a win for Gregory Eddie and for his story and for stories like this that we may understand but his story just as important as all of the other stories that have to be told out here. Thank you so much for this,” the 30-year-old said proudly.
Eddie Murphy
Murphy was honored with the Cecil B. Demille Award during the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton. Saturday Night Live alum Tracy Morgan and Murphy’s Trading Places co-star Jamie Lee Curtis were on hand to present him with the award. Murphy took the stage and thanked his team, family and former collaborators before sharing his 3 tips for success.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time so I could literally stand up here and keep saying names until they play the piano, but I’m gonna wrap it up and just say something to all the new up-and-coming dreamers and artists that are in the room tonight. I wanna let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind.”
“It’s very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business — and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f—ing mouth!” he concluded before heading off the stage with his award.
Abbott Elementary
It was a bit night for the ABC sitcom which also nabbed the award for Best Musical/Comedy Series. The win marked the first for a network series in that category in nine years. Brunson who created the hit show, accepted th award flanked by her amazing cast. “During a very tough time in this country, I’m happy that ‘Abbott Elementary’ is able to make people laugh,” she said. “Comedy is so important to me. Comedy brings people together. Comedy gives us all the same laughs.”
The executive producer also shouted out comedians in the room who have inspired her including Henry Winkler, Bob Odenkirk and Seth Rogen. Abbott came into the night as the most nominated television show with five nominations. The series is in full swing with its second season, which Brunson previously revealed that fans will see a new side of their favorite onscreen characters as the show ventures beyond the elementary school and into their homes.
Zendaya
The Euphoria actress wasn’t on hand to personally accept her first Golden Globe. The former Disney star won the award for best actress in a TV drama series beating out Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Laura Linney (Ozark), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Hilary Swank (Alaska Daily) in the category.
Presenters Glen Powell and Jay Ellis accepted it on her behalf, noting that the 26-year-old was somewhere working. “She’s busy, she’s working, y’all,” said Ellis. “It’s a good thing.” Zendaya has garnered two Emmy Awards for her role as Rue in the HBO drama.
