More info below, via TMZ:

“Our sources say Wendy will be re-evaluated by a doctor next Tuesday … and this doctor was selected by the attorney Wendy has hired to end the guardianship. We’re also told the following day, her lawyer will file an Emergency Order to Show Cause — translation, a petition to force the issue with the judge who has the power to end the guardianship.

If the judge turns down the request to end the guardianship, we’re told Wendy will demand a jury trial where jurors will decide if Wendy has regained her capacity to run her own life without guardian control.”

Williams and her team are hoping the documentary will prove that she doesn’t have Frontotemporal Dementia as described by her guardianship back in November 2024. The way TMZ explains it, that condition is considered as being impossible to recover from. Anyone watching the doc, ourselves included, can clearly see the Wendy in this current interview conducted on January 20, 2025 is far from the troubled woman we saw in Lifetime’s docu-series.

A jury trial request will reportedly be Wendy’s next option if the judge chooses not to end the conservatorship, which we hope doesn’t go that far given the clear new evidence that her health has in fact gotten better over time.

Good luck, Wendy Williams! Wendy herself states while recollecting on the turn of events, “My son, you know, overstepped his boundaries in terms of me, you understand? He overstepped his boundaries and he was inappropriately using my money without telling me crap about it. Like, is he stealing from me?!” Although Wendy says Kevin Jr. is still a good person, she also added she believes her son is “a horrible person to me.”

9. Neither side sees him as a suitable option to give responsibility of Wendy’s welfare, with the judge writing back in September, “While Mr. Hunter apologized for past mistakes and inappropriate behavior, the court is not convinced that he can keep her safe and wouldn’t willingly or unwittingly expose her to financial exploitation.”

11. A full plan is in place for the ending of Wendy Williams’ conservatorship, including a lawyer hired to get her out and a new medical evaluation as mentioned earlier. The proposal seeks to provide billions in tax relief by increasing the homestead exemption for school district property taxes.

Senate Bill 4, the Senate’s flagship property tax-cut measure, would raise the state’s homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000. This means homeowners would see a larger portion of their property value shielded from school district taxes. The Senate Local Government Committee gave the green light to the bill with a 6-0 vote, sending it to the full Senate for further consideration.

“This is real money for folks to keep them in their homes,” said Sen. Paul Bettencourt, a Houston Republican and the bill’s author.

Property tax relief remains a high priority for Texas lawmakers this year, with Gov. Greg Abbott designating tax cuts as an “emergency item.” This designation allows for expedited legislative action, and Abbott has urged lawmakers to allocate billions toward reducing property tax burdens. The Senate’s proposed budget includes $3 billion specifically to increase the homestead exemption over the next two years. According to estimates from the Legislative Budget Board, the exemption increase could cost the state $7.7 billion by 2030.

In addition to raising the homestead exemption, legislators plan to allocate another $3 billion to school districts to help lower local tax rates—honoring commitments made in prior legislative sessions. If these measures had been in place last year, a Texas homeowner paying the average school district tax rate would have saved approximately $528, based on a Texas Tribune analysis.

Texas consistently ranks among states with the highest property taxes, a consequence of its lack of an income tax. Local governments rely heavily on property taxes to fund essential services such as public education, law enforcement, and infrastructure. Between 2010 and 2023, the median property tax bill for Texas homeowners surged nearly 30%—outpacing the national average nearly threefold, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Republican lawmakers have long sought to rein in rising property tax bills, culminating in last year’s passage of $12.7 billion in tax cuts. That package included an increase to the homestead exemption and billions in funding for school districts to lower property tax rates. According to a Texas Tribune analysis, many homeowners across the state have begun to see the benefits of those cuts, alongside other tax relief measures implemented since 2019.

However, property tax collections by school districts rose again in 2024 after a temporary decline the previous year, according to estimates from the Texas Comptroller’s office. Additionally, tax bills for homeowners in Harris, Travis, and Dallas counties continued to rise, partly due to increasing property values. Some local jurisdictions in Harris and Travis counties also raised tax rates, further adding to the burden.

While the homestead exemption increase will directly benefit homeowners, Texas’ 4.2 million renter households are not eligible for similar relief. Tenants effectively contribute to property taxes through their rent payments, but state law does not provide direct tax relief to them. In response to a question from Sen. Molly Cook, a Houston Democrat, Bettencourt argued that landlords would pass along savings from tax cuts to renters in order to remain competitive. He pointed to slowing rent growth in major Texas metros, with Austin experiencing nearly two years of declining rents.

Supporters of the bill say the increased exemption would offer much-needed relief to homeowners grappling with rising housing costs, including higher property insurance rates. Advocates also argue that it could make homeownership more attainable for Texans struggling to enter the housing market.

“It’s not a panacea, but it certainly makes a difference,” said Dixon Holman, an Arlington real estate agent and board member of Texas Realtors.

However, some research suggests that increasing tax exemptions could have unintended consequences. A study from New York University and the University of Hamburg found that larger tax breaks may discourage homeowners from selling, reducing housing inventory and driving up home prices. While Texas currently has more homes on the market than during the COVID-19 pandemic, the state still faces a significant housing shortage.

The Senate has also allocated $500 million for business tax cuts, though the specifics of that plan remain unclear as the necessary legislation has yet to be filed.

Meanwhile, the Texas House has yet to reveal its approach to property tax reform this session. With newly elected House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, still in the process of forming committees, legislative movement in the House remains on hold. How the lower chamber will handle property tax cuts remains to be seen as the session progresses.

MORE FROM THE DEFENDER

Source link

NNPA Launches National Public Education and Selective Buying Campaign – Los Angeles Sentinel

Blacktwitter

Business

These are some of the companies that have publicly retreated from Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Launched in 2022, founders Victor Alade, Sodruldeen Mustapha, and Richard Oyome initially wanted to help foreign companies pay African employees to stay compliant with local norms. Oddly enough, freelancers weren’t on their radar.

However, months in, they realized the problem was workers struggling to receive payments — not the other way around. The experienced engineers took the opportunity to address the growing pain point. “A U.S. company might not care if a payment is delayed by five days, but for someone in Nigeria or Kenya, that’s a big deal — especially when converting to local currency becomes another hurdle,” Alade said.

“Businesses started asking if they could get fixed bank accounts to simplify payments. That’s when we started thinking: How big is this opportunity? Her rise to fame, marked by vulnerability, innovation, and genre-defying artistry, has been nothing short of spectacular. From an underground sensation to a Grammy-winning superstar, her career has been a testament to the power of authenticity in music.

Humble Beginnings and the Rise of a Star

Born Solána Imani Rowe in St. Louis, Missouri, SZA grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, where she was heavily influenced by jazz, alternative rock, and hip-hop. Her early musical journey was unconventional—she had no formal training but found solace in writing and experimenting with sounds.

Her career took off when she signed with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2013, making her the label’s first female artist. She released two critically acclaimed EPs, See.SZA.Run (2012) and S (2013), showcasing a dreamy, poetic, and experimental R&B sound. Her Z EP (2014) gained her a larger audience, setting the stage for her breakthrough debut album.

Breaking Through with Ctrl

SZA’s career-defining moment came in 2017 with the release of her debut studio album, Ctrl. A deeply personal and emotionally raw project, Ctrl resonated with millions, exploring themes of self-worth, love, insecurity, and modern relationships. The album featured hit singles like “Love Galore” (feat. Travis Scott), “The Weekend,” and “Broken Clocks,” earning widespread critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations.

The success of Ctrl transformed SZA into one of the leading voices in contemporary R&B, blending elements of neo-soul, alternative, and hip-hop. Her confessional songwriting and airy, effortless vocals made her an instant icon for a generation navigating the complexities of love and self-acceptance.

The Evolution: SOS and Global Domination

After a five-year hiatus, SZA returned in 2022 with her long-awaited sophomore album, SOS. The project was an even bigger cultural reset, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and staying atop the charts for weeks. Featuring hits like “Kill Bill,” “Snooze,” and “Shirt,” SOS showcased her evolution as an artist, expanding her sound to include elements of pop, alternative rock, and folk.

SOS cemented SZA’s place at the top of the music industry, earning her multiple Grammy Awards, sold-out tours, and collaborations with artists like Doja Cat, Phoebe Bridgers, and Drake.

A Super Bowl Moment to Remember

Fast forward to 2025, and SZA has now graced the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, performing alongside Kendrick Lamar in a dazzling spectacle. Their collaboration, including All the Stars from Black Panther: The Album, has become anthemic, making this performance a full-circle moment for both artists.

With her unmatched talent, raw storytelling, and fearless artistry, SZA’s Super Bowl performance isn’t just another milestone—it’s proof that she’s one of the most important voices in modern music. And with her trajectory only going up, the world eagerly awaits what’s next for this genre-defying superstar.

October 16, 2023, HOUSTON, TX – Congressional Candidate Amanda Edwards has raised over $1 million in less than 4 months, a substantial sum that helps bolster the frontrunner status of the former At-Large Houston City Council Member in her bid for U.S. Congress. Edwards raised over $433,000 in Q3 of 2023. This strong Q3 report expands on a successful Q2 where Edwards announced just 11 days after declaring her candidacy that she had raised over $600,000. With over $829,000 in cash-on-hand at the end of the September 30th financial reporting period, Edwards proves again that she is the clear frontrunner in the race. “I am beyond grateful for the strong outpouring of support that will help me to win this race and serve the incredible people of the 18th Congressional District,” said Edwards. “We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s trajectory, and we need to send servant leaders to Congress who can deliver the results the community deserves. The strong support from our supporters will help us to cultivate an 18th Congressional District where everyone in it can thrive.” Edwards said. “Amanda understands the challenges that the hard-working folks of the 18th Congressional District face because she has never lost sight of who she is or where she comes from; she was born and raised right here in the 18th Congressional District of Houston,” said Kathryn McNiel, spokesperson for Edwards’ campaign. Edwards has been endorsed by Higher Heights PAC, Collective PAC, Krimson PAC, and the Brady PAC. She has also been supported by Beto O’Rourke, among many others. About Amanda: Amanda is a native Houstonian, attorney and former At-Large Houston City Council Member. Amanda is a graduate of Eisenhower High School in Aldine ISD. Edwards earned a B.A. from Emory University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Edwards practiced law at Vinson & Elkins LLP and Bracewell LLP before entering public service. With his multifaceted talents as an actor, playwright, screenwriter, producer, and director, Tyler Perry has not only entertained but also inspired audiences worldwide, particularly within the African-American community, where his influence and role have been nothing short of powerful. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1969, Tyler Perry’s journey to stardom was a path riddled with adversity. Raised in a turbulent household, he found refuge in writing, using it as a therapeutic outlet. This period of introspection gave rise to one of his most iconic creations, Madea, a vivacious, no-nonsense grandmother who would later become a beloved figure in Perry’s works, offering a unique blend of humor and profound life lessons. Despite facing numerous challenges, including rejection and financial struggles, Perry’s determination and unwavering belief in his abilities propelled him forward. In 1992, he staged his first play, “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” which, although met with limited success, was a pivotal moment in his career. Unfazed by initial setbacks, Perry continued to hone his craft, and by 1998, he had successfully produced a string of stage plays that showcased his storytelling prowess.

Calling all teenage student-athletes! Five years later, we finally got the performance we’ve been looking for in the form of an electric solo rap showcase. His set has us wondering when we will see another rapper take center stage at America’s biggest game.

There are a few reasons to have questions. Rap isn’t building new superstars at the rate it once was and the genre is still not always palatable to the Super Bowl viewing audience. But it’s possible that Lamar’s subversive performance — coupled with Dr. Dre’s 2022 extravaganza featuring Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige and Eminem — can open the door for more rappers to walk through. So we decided to handicap the odds for a few MCs who could headline the halftime show in the next few years.

The subversive genius of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performanceRead now

Jay-Z — Odds 50:1

Jay-Z is probably the most accomplished rapper around and could do the halftime show any year he wanted. The fact that he hasn’t done it yet, including not performing in New York a few years ago, tells me that he isn’t actually interested in being a headliner or finds picking himself to be a conflict of interest.

Doechii — Odds 15:1

At this point in her career, Doechii can do anything. Musically, she’s Victor Wembanyama. There is no ceiling, and she’s the type of burgeoning star that could absolutely headline the halftime show in a few years when she stacks up a few more hits. The only reason the odds are so low is because she’s so new. I imagine they’ll change very soon. So yes, 15 to 1 may seem pretty high, but consider it a futures bet for sometime in the next decade.

Travis Scott — Odds 120:1

A few years ago it seemed like Travis Scott was destined for halftime. There’s still a world where he regains that place and the odds go higher. But right now, he’s a risky bet.

Drake — Odds 1,000:1

Drake has the hits. That’s undeniable. But he’s also got a lot of stank on him right now. Time heals all rap feud beatdowns, though. That’s not the problem. The problem is that Drake has gone scorched earth on the industry, including sending shots at Jay-Z since Kendrick Lamar was announced as the halftime performer this year. I’m just not sure how Drake will be able to do the show while Jay is calling the shots.

2025 NFL predictions: Bad Bunny, a Super Bowl rematch and Jayden Daniels’ continued ascentRead now

Megan Thee Stallion — Odds 5:1

She’s one of rap’s big crossover stars, and if anyone is primed to headline, it’s Meg. (Courtesy photo)

Media mogul and Howard University alum Nick Cannon hosted the festivities. Nearly 25 years after his breakout role in “Drumline,” the film’s cultural impact is still palpable. The crowd of nearly 50,000 attendees was elated to see Cannon and his “Drumline” co-star, actor Orlando Jones, who made a guest appearance when the event commenced.

During a press conference, Cannon marveled at how the success of “Drumline” created more awareness around the elite level of discipline, and athleticism required to be a part of a collegiate band.

“When we shot ‘Drumline’ in 2001, this was a subculture,” said Cannon. “Now for it to be the culture and on full display, on so many stages shows the evolution of art imitating life, and life imitating art because we’re here in a real battle of the bands. At the time [when we filmed]at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, something of this magnitude was fictitious, so to see the evolution is quite remarkable.”

In conversation with Cannon and the media, Jasmine Cockfield, Honda Battle of the Bands project lead at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., reflected on a kismet moment.

“I was scrolling through Facebook and on this day in 2011, I was traveling to Atlanta to the Honda Battle of the Bands as a Jackson State student to support my friends who were in the ‘Sonic Boom of the South’ [marching band],” she recalled.

“Fourteen years later, I’m leading the Honda Battle of the Bands. So that continues to show not only Honda’s full commitment but a full circle moment for myself as well. HBCU culture is on full display and I’m excited to be here and lead in this role.”

The event provided a multifaceted opportunity for attendees to not only enjoy the music but also learn about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through a partnership with the Black College Expo.

Founded in 1999 by Dr. Theresa Price, the Black College Expo is a nationwide tour that provides students with information about HBCUs. Within the 26 years since its inception, the Black College Expo has helped to increase enrollment in some institutions by upwards of 50%.

On the day of Battle of the Bands, over 200 colleges and universities were present at Sofi Stadium resulting in thousands of students having the opportunity to be interviewed by recruiters, get accepted on-the-spot and receive scholarships.

Reflecting on the collaborative experience Dr. Price told the Sentinel, “It was amazing. There was so much unity in the community, and we gave away over $35 million in scholarships.”

Black on the Block, the premiere flea market for small businesses in Los Angeles, also had an activation at Battle of the Bands. Founded by sisters Lanie and Char Edwards, vendors received a unique opportunity to reach a broader demographic of customers by showcasing their products at the event.

The Edwards sisters gave insight into working with Honda to integrate Black on the Block into Battle of the Bands.

“Our vendors definitely got great exposure. Right when it started at 9 a.m., thousands of people were already there. We’re used to a slower trickle-in at our events, so it was cool to see so many people there right on time,” said Lanie Edwards.

She continued, “Black on the Block and the Black College Expo were the entities that could bring all these businesses together in a space they wouldn’t normally be in so I think that’s the real win for everyone. I would love to do something like this at Sofi Stadium again. It was a beautiful, and really positive experience,” added Edwards.

Battle of the Band concluded with a performance by GRAMMY-nominated rapper GloRilla who amplified the energy of the stadium with a medley of her hits.

In addition to Battle of the Bands, Honda also supports the Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) a “Jeopardy” style academic competition in which students can win grants and other prizes. This puts you in a broad category shared by much of humanity at some point. It’s rational to feel fear when facing a threat and wanting to protect yourself or others. Sometimes, fear even overlaps with expressions of faith.

There are times when fear is necessary. However, the kind of fear I want to address here is the paralyzing kind — the fear that leaves you unsure of what to do, where to go, or how to move forward in life. Many people are afraid to risk change or to make any change at all because the future is uncertain.

This fear is illustrated in Luke 19, where a wealthy man distributes money to his workers before going away on business. He gives one worker ten minas, another five minas, and another one mina. A mina was approximately three months’ salary. Upon his return, the man asks for an accounting of how they managed his money.

The worker who received ten minas proudly reports a 100% return on investment, earning praise and a reward. The second worker, who received five minas, also doubled the investment and was similarly rewarded. However, the third worker, who was given one mina, returned with nothing but excuses.

Instead of investing or doing the bare minimum by entrusting his mina to money changers, this worker was paralyzed by fear. He blamed the wealthy man, accusing him of being harsh. Displeased, the nobleman rebuked the worker, saying he should have at least made a modest effort. The fearful worker’s failure led to his mina being taken and given to others.

What was the worker’s downfall? Fear. He admitted, “I was afraid.” His own words condemned him. When you speak negativity, you create setbacks for yourself. Fear works to destroy faith. Don’t let it win.

Faith and effort go hand in hand. Those who complain, remain stagnant, and maintain a negative outlook often watch others progress. To slay your dragon, start by praying and taking your concerns to the Lord.

We can all work on slaying our own dragon. Pray. Pray. Pray. Take whatever it is to the Lord in prayer. The gorgeous star posed in a Rick Owens jacket while sporting an iced-out grill, looking like a villainized hunk about to take over the film industry—and he may do just that. In an exclusive interview with GQ, Jordan revealed to the esteemed magazine that he is in full work mode and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

According to Jordan’s exclusive interview with GQ, he planned to grind in his 20s and relax in his 30s. However, those plans have been deferred. The “Creed III” star is currently gearing up for a role in an upcoming Ryan Coogler film, Sinners, and taking on the dual job as director and actor in The Thomas Crown Affair reboot. “I think part of the goal,” he explained in GQ, “is to get to a place where my life or anything around it doesn’t change if I all of a sudden decide I may not want to work this year, or the year after that. I might want to spend time doing other things.”

Michael B. Jordan Discusses Leveling Up in his Career in GQ

Despite his booked and busy 2025 calendar and tenacious work ethic, Jordan is looking forward to living a balanced life and having the discretion to either work or take a year off. “I’m hoping that one day something clicks where it’s like, ‘You don’t have to work at the same pace that you worked at your entire career.’ I think it’s coming soon. But I said this 10 years ago. I really, really, really think it’s coming soon. I really do,” proclaimed Jordan.

The California native has been in the film industry for over 20 years and is just now getting to a place where he has influence over the film projects he’s involved in, and to maintain this freedom – he’s keeping his foot on the gas. “So when you get to a position now where you can move and impose your will in certain situations and create things, and have your own agency—I spent more time struggling and trying to build something than I have been in a position where I can be moving. I’m not content. I’m going to continue to build and grow,” declared Jordan.

Click here to read the entire interview.

SEE ALSO:

Michael B.
