Most people watching the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles were focused on the stars, the speeches, and the winners. But behind the scenes, nine emerging filmmakers had an experience few get—a chance to see Hollywood up close, not as spectators but as future industry leaders.
They are part of the Academy Gold Rising Talent Development Program, an initiative designed to give young professionals a way into a notoriously difficult business. At a time when studios are tightening budgets and productions are increasingly moving overseas, this program provides mentorship, hands-on training, and direct access to industry decision-makers—critical support for the next generation of storytellers.
At a time when many corporations and small businesses are dismantling their DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs—often facing economic backlash, as seen with companies like Target—the Academy remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering new voices. The Academy Gold Rising Talent Development Program is proof of this dedication, ensuring that all young artists, including those from underrepresented communities, have the resources, mentorship, and career pathways necessary to succeed in Hollywood.
Meredith Shea, the Academy’s Chief Membership, Impact, and Industry Officer, had this to say about how vital diversity and inclusion is to storytelling and more:
“Through the Academy’s Gold Rising program, the Academy helps to create pathways for underrepresented communities within the film industry,” Shea said. “By doing so, we aim to foster a more diverse talent pool that ensures the future of film is robust and reflects the world around us.”
