*We caught up with Danai Gurira during the Television Critics Winter Press Tour (TCA) earlier this month to unpack the return of her beloved character Michonne in the new “Walking Dead” series titled “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,” starring Andrew Lincoln.
The new series finds Lincoln and Gurira return as the beloved TWD characters “Rick Grimes” and “Michonne” in the highly anticipated next series in the Walking Dead Universe, premiering Sunday, February 25 at 9:00 pm ET on AMC and AMC+.
Per the official synopsis, “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”
The series also stars Pollyanna McIntosh, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Terry O’Quinn, Matthew August Jeffers, Craig Tate and Andrew Bachelor.
Michonne has become one of the most beloved characters in “The Walking Dead” universe. During TCA, EUR’s Ny MaGee asked Danai Gurira what she can tease about her journey this season, and what new challenges she faces in this chapter of her story. Will the viewers be surprised by where she and Rick end up by the time this season ends?

Her response… “Well, that last bit I can’t answer, you know. We’re, like, you know, we have been programmed to not answer such things. But, yeah, she definitely is going through quite a journey in the series. There are a lot of things that happen that she does not expect. There are ways that she has to pivot and adjust that she does not expect. There is, you know, the journey to find her man is not an easy one. It comes in ways she can never have imagined, and even at the end of the Mothership series, she’d gone through some stuff in his absence that had shifted her dealing with people who came into her space, who are like sisters to her, and betrayed her and, you know, almost made her lose the baby,” the actress explained.
Gurira continued, “So, she’s gone through a lot and made her very closed off. She’s opened up again, and then, you know, we’ll see what happens. What I like about the series, which is why I’m very protective about spoilers, and I’m like, no, Andy, don’t say it, is because I think that there’s a ride that people are going to get to take, and I really, really want them to take that ride.
She added, “Everything and everyone, all our amazing support cast, they — everyone just ups the ante of the journey that they take, and they up the ante of these characters in a way that’s very unexpected, and no one’s going to see them coming. So I just love that about the journey I want the audience to take.”
