Iwájú, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment powerhouse, Kugali, creates an animated world set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The show follows Tola, a 10-year-old girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the mysteries and perils hidden between different worlds.
EBONY spoke with the Kugali filmmakers behind Iwájú director and writer Olufikayo Ziki Adeola and discussed the real-life divide that inspired the series. Production designer Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultant Tolu Olowofoyeku shared insight on Iwájú’s design and language, which enhance its themes of technology, art and privilege.
Iwájú is now streaming on Disney+.
