A father of six, Harold Phillips, is currently battling for his life in a Detroit hospital after being attacked by three dogs in the Chicago and Longacre area. The attack occurred after the dogs had escaped from a nearby backyard as he was walking home from shopping for a job interview.
Phillips has been on life support since the incident due to the severe nature of his injuries, according to Daily Mail. Phillips’ family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the increasing medical expenses following the dog attack.
The fundraising effort has already garnered over $12,000 in support. Married to Shauntaye for 11 years, the couple has six children, all under the age of 18. The family is confronting the possibility of a future without their father and is contemplating the difficult decision of whether to remove him from life support.
The victim’s wife revealed the brutal details of the dog attack, stating that the dogs mauled him in various areas including the groin, head, back, and legs. She noted that dogs are meant to protect the home and questioned why they attacked someone who posed no threat while simply walking home to his family.
Haroun Phillips, Phillip’s youngest son, said: “If you don’t know how to contain a dog, don’t buy one.
“(There) should be justice – I don’t know what to say. It’s my dad, it’s him, he’s not supposed to die like this. He’s too strong.”
The GoFundMe page states that Phillips is not expected to survive the severe injuries from the dog attack. Described as an exceptional father and husband, the family is seeking financial assistance to cover his medical costs, acknowledging the grim possibility of funeral expenses.
The heartbreaking impact is expressed by Phillip’s 8-year-old daughter, Hailey Phillips, who laments not having a father to take care of her.
“I’m heartbroken cause I don’t have a father that can take care of me,” said Hailey Phillips.
“My children do not have their father now,” Shauntaye said. “We’re about to have to plan a funeral, and that’s hard.”
The dogs involved in the attack on Phillips are currently held by Detroit Animal Care and Control. The owner of the dogs has reportedly received citations for multiple past ordinance violations.
The family of Phillips has since filed a lawsuit against the owner and the city of Detroit.
