A video of Inez Hudson,73, and her baked goods was uploaded on TikTok recently, causing her to become very popular. The Lakeland grandmother sells sweet potato pie, red velvet with cream cheese frosting and pecans, and pineapple pound cake with cream cheese frosting outside Super Choice Foods.
She told Fox13, “I do it all myself. I got into baking when I was very young and it’s just something I like to do and I just started baking stuff, you know. As years went by, I kept baking and selling. I started doing this for the church.”
She’s been selling pies and cakes outside the grocery store since November 2018, frequently rising at midnight to start baking. There will be periods when business is extremely slow and times when she will sell out. However, the video caused her baked goods to run out recently.
Mannie, a fellow Lakelander, purchased her cakes and also shared a touching video on TikTok that has received over 400,000 views in an effort to promote her little business.
Mannie told the outlet, “That’s the main reason why I made it. Not to go viral for social media purposes. I just wanted local people to support each other because that’s the best rewarding experience.”
The septuagenarian retiree relies on cake sales to make up for her poor fixed income. According to Hudson, the owner of the grocery store doesn’t charge her for using his space.
She mentioned that she would love to start her own business. However, she is getting older, and thus for the time being, this setup is easy, enjoyable, and sweet, she said.
