There were four college football players from Historically Black College and University’s (HBCU), have been drafted during the 2022 NFL Draft. This comes after the 2021 NFL Draft, where not one HBCU football player was drafted. The first HBCU player drafted in last week’s draft was was Fayetteville State cornerback Joshua Williams. Kansas City Chiefs selected Williams with the 135th pick overall in the 4th round.
The second HBCU player drafted was South Carolina State University cornerback Decobie Durant, was awarded MEAC Defensive Player of the Year. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams with the 142nd pick overall in the 4th round. The third HBCU player drafted Jackson State University outside linebacker James Houston IV, who was earned Newcomer of the Year. Houston was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 217th pick overall in the 6th round. The last HBCU player drafted was Southern University offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter, who was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 226th pick overall in the 7th round.
NFL Hall of Famer and current Jackson State Deion Sanders, who’s now Jackson State head football coach, expressed his joy with how the draft played out.
“Let’s go, NFL. HBCUs! Everybody that has anything to do with an HBCU, you should be shouting right now and dancing. As a matter of fact, hit the organ right now,” he said in an Instagram video he posted.
