In an insightful conversation with Variety Magazine, Ice Spice granted insight into her experiences within the music industry. She attributes her unwavering drive to her father, Joseph Gaston, who instilled a profound “competitive spirit.”
Interestingly, Gaston himself has a rich history in hip-hop as an underground MC, although he remains discreet about his stage moniker. The “Deli” rapper also revealed that her father has chosen to lead a more private life nowadays, channeling his energy into a successful career as a realtor based in the Bronx.
Ice Spice begins by highlighting the influence of her father, stating:
“It is a competition at the end of the day. People want to be all ‘I’m a girl’s girl,’ but then behind the scenes being b*tches,” she says. “Basically, we here, the girls, are doing amazing. I’m excited to see it. I feel like the competition is what keeps us all excited because I think we all secretly enjoy competing and seeing who put that sh*t on better and who’s gon’ get the most views. I can be transparent, and I know the competition is checking on me too, which is why it’s OK to say that. Because it’s like, ‘Yeah, girl, I’m watching you and I know you watching me.’ And boys are watching too, because they be secretly haters.” She adds, “But everybody today is competing with everybody no matter if you a boy, girl, nonbinary, whatever it is. You still checking in on your competition. That’s in every industry.”
Support for Ice Spice’s perspective flooded social media, where one user wrote, “The only honest one. And even if the girl’s didn’t start as competitive, their labels definitely put the idea in their heads cause they want and need the money! If there’s competition in regular low paying jobs, there will 100% be competition in entertainment, be serious.”
Notably, Ice Spice addresses the controversy surrounding The 1975’s Matt Healy. Healy had referred to the Bronx native as a “chubby Chinese lady,” during a podcast episode on the Adam Friedland Show, which was later deleted.
Ice Spice reveals her initial confusion stating:
“When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused. Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some shit like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care. But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”
Ice Spice then explained that she chose not to engage in the controversy surrounding Healy’s comments because she had “too much to lose.”
Following her success in hip-hop, the “Munch” rapper has embarked on many endeavors, including her most recent collaboration with Dunkin Donuts. Ice Spice has joined forces with the fast-food corporation to introduce a drink inspired by her, named the ‘Ice Spice Munchkin Drink.’
In a loosely related development, rising rapper Sexyy Red has been making waves in the music industry. Known for her edgy style and stunning rise to popularity, the “Pound Town” rapper has recently embarked on a tour alongside Drake and 21 Savage for It’s All A Blur Tour. Additionally, she will be headlining her solo tour, titled the “Hood Hottest Princess” Tour.
