*MSNBC host Joy Reid is clapping back at the narrative that Black voters are going to support Trump in the 2024 presidential election following his arrest and specifically because of his mugshot.
As Alternet.com reports, The ReidOut Blog writer Ja’han Jones noted in an August 28 report that “Following [ex-President Donald] Trump’s arrest in Georgia on charges related to his efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election, conservative media figures have trotted out a particularly desperate line: that Trump is going to win over more Black voters than previously thought because he’s been arrested.”
Reid slammed Fox News hosts during Tuesday night’s “The ReidOut,” for suggesting that Trump’s mugshot has earned him major clout in the Black community.
“You go back and think about people arrested in the 1960s,” Reid said. “[Former U.S. Representative] John Lewis’ (D-GA) mugshot is a badge of honor, but it was what he was arrested for. He was arrested in order to protest for people to vote and have civil rights.”
She continued, “Donald Trump wasn’t arrested for protesting for civil rights. Donald Trump has been accused of stealing national security including nuclear secrets. He has been accused of sexual misconduct against a woman and that’s a civil case. He has been accused of attempting to steal an election and conduct a coup. The idea that Black people, simply because he was arrested, are going to gravitate toward him, I actually — you know, it’s almost so creatively racist that I’m almost impressed that they have all come up with this.
Reid further explained, “And on Fox, this is their new talking point. They think Black people like criminals, and that’s what they think of Black folk. They even think Atlanta is a giant criminal stew of the hood, and therefore any mural in Atlanta has got to be pro-Donald Trump and got to be Black people lining up to praise him. It’s what they think of black people, the reason that they can’t get Black people to vote for them.”
Meanwhile, a coalition of Black Trump supporters rallied outside the Fulton County Jail after the former president’s arrest in Atlanta. Former New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Derrick Gibson was spotted wearing a “Niggas 4 Trump” shirt.
EUR reported previously, citing CNN, that Donald Trump surrendered at the Fulton County jail last week on more than a dozen charges, the fourth time this year he has faced criminal charges. Trump agreed to a $200,000 bond and other release conditions, including not using social media to target the co-defendants and witnesses in the case.
Trump covered the cost of his $200,000, bond by putting 10% toward it and working with a local Atlanta bonding company called Foster Bail Bonds LLC, sources told CNN.
Following his release, Trump told reporters, “It’s a very sad day for America. This should never happen. If you challenge an election, you should be able to challenge an election.”
He continued, “I thought the election was a rigged election, a stolen election, and I should have every right to do that. As you know, you have many people that you’ve been watching over the years doing the same thing, whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrams or many others.”
