Since the presidential inauguration, there’s been a wave of legal battles, but not all of it is bad news. Judge Melodee Armstrong joined Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell to break down some of the latest court rulings and what they mean for everyday people.
One of the biggest victories has been for workers. Thousands of employees from over 18 federal agencies who were illegally fired have now been reinstated. “They’re going back to work,” Judge Armstrong confirmed. This ruling affects probationary workers across multiple agencies, giving them their jobs and livelihoods back.
Another key battle has been in labor rights. Companies like Amazon and Starbucks, which have historically resisted unions, attempted to challenge the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by claiming it was unconstitutional. However, the courts ruled in favor of the board, allowing it to continue protecting workers’ rights. Judge Armstrong highlighted the reinstatement of Gwynne Wilcox, the first Black woman to lead the NLRB. “Within 30 days of bringing her claim, she was cheered back to work,” she said, emphasizing the significance of her role in holding major corporations accountable.
Beyond labor issues, courts have been actively pushing back against attempts to expand executive power. “Some judges are committed to the law, not loyalty,” Armstrong explained. Recent rulings have rejected efforts to deport Venezuelans using outdated wartime powers, ban birthright citizenship, and withhold federal aid funds that were already promised. Even the Supreme Court ruled that U.S. aid money must be paid for work already done, ensuring government contracts are honored.
With so much happening in the courts, Armstrong stressed the importance of people taking action in their everyday lives. “We have to plan. We have to use the ballot and the buck,” she urged. Supporting companies that value diversity, equity, and inclusion—such as Apple, Costco, and Delta Airlines—can make a difference. “Support them because they support you,” she advised. Additionally, she encouraged people to contact their elected officials repeatedly until their concerns are addressed.
