*Kold x Windy is the new WE TV series that follows rising hip hop and drill star Malika “Kold” Wise (Sh’Kia Augustin, “Black Lightning”), a woman who is desperate to create a better life for herself and her son in Chicago’s south side. Her childhood best friend and group member Renee “Windy” Johnson (Nijah Brenea, “Rap Sh!t”) is the more violent of the duo with an unwavering dedication to the city.
As Malika’s career ignites, the challenges and ops become overwhelming. Her involvement with credit card fraud and rival drill artists viewing her as a threat combined with pressures from a new love. Malika stands to lose everything. Her group member Renee doesn’t support Malika’s desire to change her image and will stop at nothing to prevent it.
EUR’s Jill Munroe spoke exclusively with Kold x Windy stars Augustin and Brenea about their characters and what to expect this season.
“KoldXWindy” Stars Sh’Kia Augustin & Nijah Brenea
Augustin shared, “Both of these women – Kold and windy – are trying to perpetuate the image of drill rap. Malika is obviously strong, but she’s trying to be strong in a different way now. I sometimes think when you are a rapper focusing on violence, they have that strong black woman trope. We’re supposed to do all the things and be all the things to everybody. But in season one, we’re seeing Malika choose herself, not Kold and windy.”
For Brenea, portraying the violent Renee “Windy” left her in a dark space for a minute.
She explained, “Renee specifically because she definitely is very violent. It got a little dark. Some days, I dreamed about what was happening on set because I wanted to make this real and really connect with Renee and Wendy. I don’t see myself as a violent person in real life. But of course, you don’t want to judge the character; you want to connect with them. So I see why she does the things she does. I just tried to make them synonymous, like, okay, I wouldn’t go that far. But maybe I would do this. I think it’s dope. I love that it’s something that you haven’t seen, and I feel like playing windy. It just made me stand on what I want and go after what I want.”

“Kold X Windy” airs Thursdays at 10 PM ET/9 PM CT on WE tv. New episodes become available on AMC’s streaming service, ALLBLK, every Monday following their WE tv airing.
