The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Pratt, who is majoring in Music, is from Camden, New Jersey.

We interviewed Ja’Mari Pratt, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

Read the full interview below.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

It takes dedication and great time management.

What made you decide to attend Allen University for undergrad?

I chose to attend Allen University because I wanted to get away from home and see new things. It’s also a small comfortable campus where I can receive more one-on-one education.

How has Allen University molded you into the person you are today?

Allen University molded me into the man I am today through being able to have male counselors and lots of role models that look like me and have been through what I [have been]through.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

I have boosted the spirit on campus by at least 80%. Dress attire has changed which helps boost the confidence of a lot of men on campus.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

Through mental health events such as “sip and paints/ mentors for each classification/ and pillow talks.” We are also working on getting mental health days installed to our academic calendar.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is something that’s already in you but you need that person to help develop it through mentorship or life events. Leadership isn’t something you choose, it’s something already destined.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard teaches the culture and helps student have pride and confidence in themselves. It’s like a telescope which helps those who aren’t hip to HBCU’s see another light in HBCU’s.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

Going to grad school to become a principal.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Ja’Mari Pratt for his work as the SGA president of Allen University.
