Post-Civil War, western flick Surrounded follows the journey of Mo Washington, a free Black woman, who has her sights set on a lucrative gold mine. Disguising herself as a man, she encounters a sticky situation that threatens her livelihood.
EBONY correspondent Jenn Rodriguez spoke with Letitia Wright, the star of the film, about the experience of embodying the former Buffalo soldier and the challenges and struggles her character had to overcome.
“As a Black woman, there is a necessary shift that we are seeing for us in society that is long overdue—of our self importance and our self-worth. We are seeing that in media as well,” says Wright of Washington. “This character is showing that there is such a fight, such a resilience to her. And that there is also a vulnerability and so many layers to us as Black women.”
