Hartbeat’s Women Write Now program, in conjuction with the Sundance Institute, is a comedic writing fellowship designed to champion the next generation of Black women in comedy through mentorship, advocacy, productionand exhibition. One of the recipients of Hartbeat’s annual comedic screenwriting fellowship Danielle Solomon was paired with actress Logan Browning, who directed her first film, Hey Boo. The short film explores the life of an Atlanta-based hair braider who is notorious for canceling her clients and is finding herself in a situation where she is being cancelled by the internet, and has to make amends to stay in good graces with her clientele.
EBONY correspondent Jenn Rodriguez spoke with Browning, who is also a True Botanicals celebrity ambassador, about her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
“I didn’t know what a director was. As a kid, you don’t exactly know what a director is or does. When I began my career in acting, which I love, I always followed directors on set. I thought, ‘Man, they are really captaining the ship.’ The energy starts from the top down. They get to interact with every department to mold and create something,” said Browning.
