“Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is returning for season three!

Set in the early 90’s the show does more than hit the mark when it comes to recreating iconic 90s style. And that is all due to the talented head costume designer Tsigie White. White has been in the industry for years and has finally landed a role where she can not only showcase her talents but also show her own expression through her work.

Starz recently held The Fashion Experience Power Luncheon to represent White’s work on the series. The Fashion Experience Power Luncheon was held at the Founders House in LA. The Founders House is a community of beauty and fashion entrepreneurs, and influencers. During the lunch, there was a panel discussion with White where she shared how she got started in the business and how she prepared for her role as the head costume designer for “Power Book III.”

White has worked on several shows that were period pieces, and she began to feel like that wasn’t what she wanted to do.

“I want to do contemporary work, I don’t want to do period,” said White.

When the opportunity came along to work on “Power” she was finally able to do the work she wanted to do. The style of “Power” is a mix of contemporary and period. When she got the opportunity to work on “Power” she realized the work she did in the past only made her more prepared for her work on this series.

“I realized that all of those jobs that I was on, they were all preparing me to execute on the level that I execute,” said White.

In my opinion, when a creative is able to do what they love it shows in their work. It’s not always easy for TV shows to properly recreate looks from the 90’s. It’s an era where hip-hop started to make its influence on fashion. If not done right it can come off as cheesy or stereotypical. White wanted to make sure the looks came across as authentic. Growing up in the 90s herself she was inspired by the looks she remembered from her childhood.

“I grew up with a house full of women that loved to shop, even thinking back to my childhood. I feel like I was being prepared for this moment,” said White.

White’s vision and knowledge truly bring an authentic representation of the culture to the costumes she creates.

Catch the new looks when “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” premieres December 1st on Starz.
