Nationwide — Whoopi Goldberg is under fire after referring to herself as a “working person” on a recent episode of The View. The 69-year-old actress and host’s comments received criticism, with others labeling her an “elite.”

During a discussion about the U.S. presidential election, Sara Haines, one of her co-hosts, mentioned that many voters might have supported Donald Trump because he resonated with the working class. Goldberg responded by saying she understands their struggles.

“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me too,” Goldberg said, according to Business Insider. “I work for a living. If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here. I’m a working person, you know, and my kid has to feed her family, you know, and my great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family.”

Her comments quickly drew backlash on social media, with many pointing out that, as a wealthy celebrity, Goldberg seems out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people. One TikTok user with over 650,000 followers shared a video reacting to Goldberg’s statement, which has now gained more than 8.3 million views.

However, some defended Goldberg, praising her honesty. Media personality Perez Hilton, posted on X saying, “She could never work again ever and be fine. But I like her honesty. If she had even more money, she wouldn’t be on ‘The View.’ I respect that.”

Moreover, Goldberg has been a co-host on The View since 2007 and reportedly earns $5 to $6 million annually from the show. Her net worth, although not officially confirmed, is estimated at $60 million.
