Dr. William Finlayson has been honored with a street for his service to Bronzeville District. As a physician, he helped deliver the expectant mothers of an estimated 10,000 children.
He was a friend and classmate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and shared the vision of making his society better. As a result of this, Milwaukee Council decided to rename 5th Street as Dr. William Finlayson Street.
The move by the community lends credence to the significance of Dr. Finlayson’s influence in the district. He was the first Black doctor at St. Joseph’s and Sinai hospitals and played a significant role in promoting justice. He also established Milwaukee’s first Black-owned bank. Dr. Finlayson was dedicated to creating a positive impact, according to Fox 6 Now.
He had a close connection with civil rights leader King, as evidenced by photos displayed in his home. His impact is widely recognized and praised by individuals such as former Milwaukee Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt and Albert Smith from Alpha Phi Alpha.
“Dr. Finlayson is among that group that we call the greatest in their generation,” said Pratt.
Dr. Finlayson expressed his gratitude for the recognition; the 98-year-old was at the street sign unveiling Tuesday. His daughter, Sheila Finlayson, emphasized that his contributions will be remembered as people pass through the street.
