Hip hop icon Tupac Shakur will have a street named after him in the city of Oakland, reports NBC Bay Area.
On Tuesday, the city council voted unanimously to rename part of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue in honor of the late rapper. The street will be known as Tupac Shakur Way, and will feature commemorative signage. Shakur once resided in an apartment complex at 275 MacArthur Boulevard in the early 1990s.
The resolution to rename the street for the iconic rapper celebrates his contributions to art and social outreach.
“MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue where [Shakur] once lived serves to remind us of his contributions to Oakland and our communities through the celebration of art and culture as an awakening tool towards changes in society,” states the resolution.
Although Shakur was born in Harlem and went to high school in Baltimore, Maryland, he’s always been recognized as a son of Oakland. While living in the city, Shakur launched his rap career as a member of the Digital Underground before going solo in 1991 with his debut, 2Pacalypse Now. In 2016, the city marked June 16 as Tupac Shakur Day.
Considered one of the greatest rappers, Shakur sold more than 75 million records worldwide with several multi-platinum LPs, including Me Against the World, All Eyez On Me, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, and several others.
As an actor, he appeared in classic films such as Juice, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim, and many more.
No date has been given for the unveiling ceremony.
