We often think of education as simply training…but another really important aspect is about producing new knowledge and new insights into the world.” It’s the motto that’s guided Professor Lesley Lokko as the founding director of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg. As one of the 2024 EBONY’s Power 100 STEM Trailblazers, Lokko acknowledges the real meaning behind power. “It’s about extending one’s influence, the kind of influence of the Black creative diaspora, not just creative in the arts, but also in the sciences.” The first Black woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects, Lokko’s work is far from done. She and her team will launch Nomadic African Studio, which is set to hold its first architectural seminar this year. She shares the importance of amplifying voices that haven’t been heard and her hope for a more unified future.
