Tragedy struck the Heard County Braves Football team when one of their rising stars, Antwon Carter, drowned during a trip to Alabama with his teammates. The incident occurred while they were jumping off rocks during a last-minute outing. According to a Facebook post by the team, Carter was swept away by the strong current behind the rocks, and despite his teammates’ efforts, they were unable to save him.

Recounting the school’s memory of him, the Heard County High School Football Head Coach, Shane Lasseter, said the player was an affable person who always wore an infectious smile. He said Carter had a positive relationship with everyone around him.

The entire school system, including the Heard County Schools Superintendent, Rodney Kay, expressed their deep sorrow over Carter’s passing, requesting thoughts and prayers for his family, the football team, the high school, and the entire community during this difficult time.

As a football player, Carter played as a running back and outside linebacker for the Braves, leaving a notable impact on the team with his skills and dedication. In his three seasons, he accumulated 563 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns, while also contributing 60 tackles and seven tackles for losses, according to Atlanta News First.

Coach Lasseter expressed his grief in a heartfelt post, acknowledging that words could not adequately describe the massive impact Carter had as a son, brother, and teammate. The team pledged to honor his memory as they prepare to begin the 2023 season, and they will undoubtedly carry his spirit with them as they take the field.

The entire community is mourning the loss of this promising young athlete, whose life was tragically cut short a week before the first day of school. As they prepare for the upcoming school year, the thoughts and prayers of many are with Carter’s family, friends, and teammates, who will never forget him as #23 and cherish the memories they shared with him.
