*Russell Westbrook has vowed to construct 180 affordable homes in the South Los Angeles community where he grew up.

The NBA star recently revealed his involvement in revitalizing an area that was devastated during civil unrest following the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles Police Department officers in 1992, Essence reports.

Westbrook is bringing retail businesses to a new South Los Angeles community, writing on social media: “Proud to be investing in my community, South Central LA. We’re building 180 affordable housing units, surrounded by community centered businesses and anchored by @target. Real LA native,” he captioned two photos on Instagram.

Target is a key partner in the Evermont Project initiative, which aims to offer affordable housing and incorporate community-focused businesses.

In an Instagram video, Westbrook said, “Evermont stands tall as a beacon of collaboration between the city, county, local, and business communities. This represents a thriving example of what happens when we come together, fostering empowerment and driving the positive change that this community has been waiting for.”

In the clip, City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Elle Perrault from the Vermont Knolls Resident Association, and Pastor Jeffrey Lewis from New Antioch Church of God also share insight about the project.

“Russell Westbrook is not just investing in housing; he is investing in the future of South Los Angeles. The Evermont Project will not only provide affordable homes but will also create a vibrant community with opportunities for local businesses to thrive,” Harris-Dawson said.

As The Blast reports, the group also shared the inspirational video, stating, “This Black History Month, we celebrated resilience, progress and unity in our communities in the heart of Los Angeles on a site that was burned to the ground during the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest. Evermont’ stands tall as a beacon of collaboration between the city, county, local and business communities.”

They added, “Beyond retail, ‘Evermont’ will provide local jobs which are pathways to economic equity, dignity, and a brighter future. This project showcases the strength that emerges when we invest in our communities of color. From neglect to the symbol of rebirth, ‘Evermont’ is rewriting the story of South LA.”
