The Serra JV baseball team ended their season on a high note by securing a 7-4 victory over the St. Paul Swordsman. Early scores and late strikeouts would help the Cavaliers win.

Serra played St Paul on Monday, defeating them 8-7. Cavaliers’ sophomore CJ Hughes noted how keeping the same game plan would be imperative for their win.

“There was no reason to switch things up and try new things,” Hughes said. “Just going in there, do the same thing, get another win.”

Serra players made six hits in the first inning. Sophomore Macade Maxwell noted how the Cavaliers were anticipating winning the game.

“We came out strong the first inning, got seven across the board,” Maxwell said. “I think it’s a good job.”

Sophomore Joshua Brunson pitched for the first five innings, making five strikeouts, and allowing two runs. Three of those strikeouts came in the fourth inning.

“I wasn’t able to really find my strike zone, I was kind of struggling at the beginning,” Brunson said. “As the inning went on, I started finding it more and more, especially during the last few innings that I pitched.”

Along with their pitching, the Cavalier’s skills in the outfield limited the Swordsman’s at bats. Serra committed a double play to usher in the bottom of the second inning.

St. Paul went into the sixth inning with two runs. A 2RBI double would put them within three points of the Cavaliers.

“Our coach, he just had a little talk to us, told us to keep our heads in the game,” Hughes said. “Then we didn’t really struggle from then on. I feel like that helped us a lot.”

Hughes would be the last of three pitchers, closing the game out with three consecutive strikeouts.

“Those crucial wins for the end of the season, able to booster our spot in league play,” Maxwell said. “I think that was a good game to play.”

Serra has a 4-8-1 overall record, the squad has a strong bond.

“We’re always talking, we’re always so energetic on the field,” Maxwell said. “We always have a good time when we’re out playing, win or lose. I think it’s just a good team that we got here.”
