Sugar Popped is a popular fashion brand owned and operated by husband and wife duo April and Jason White. The two met at Morgan State University and bonded over fashion which led them to create the brand they have today which is available both online and at their boutique in downtown Atlanta. Their upcoming collaboration with Trina will feature an exclusive collection inspired by the rapper.

The fashion designers opened up about what inspires their clothes, what to expect in the new collection, and how social media has taken their brand to the next level.

What inspires your designs?

Jason White: We do a lot of designing and we also do a lot of sourcing as well. So we like to blend everything together, but we want to get more into the designing as well. [Like] fully designing. But right now we do both, but it’s pretty cool.

April White: I think it’s pretty fun because Jason brings the street-edge style, which sometimes I can be like “omg, no” and then I’m like over-the-top sexy, and he’s like ‘oh no, that’s a little too much.’ So, we kind of blend our styles together. A lot of times the main thing we outsource is the fabrics because we are still learning that sort of [section], but he’s been really good with just putting me on to different things that I’m not used to. So, we just collaborate and go from there.

What can people expect to see in the new collaboration with Trina?

AW: So Trina will have her own collection and the collection will be 12 pieces. We are super excited, We’ve been working on this collection since probably late November. So, it’s pretty exciting and it’s going to be a big collection because it’s items that we never released before and Trina had some input into it also. And the fact that she was hands-on with shooting and making sure it came out the way [we envisioned]. She was like very important.

How has social media helped your brand grow?

JW: Social media is huge. Having a physical location and being online is amazing. Social media gives you a bigger audience to gravitate to as opposed to being a physical store and a chance to get physical clients in-state and reach people worldwide. There’s definitely a plus [to]having social media.

AW: I think it brings a lot of people in globally. You’ll see a lot of the influencers we use, [some]are from Ghana wearing our items, and our girls in Brazil, so we are super excited to meet and work with these influencers all the time.
