We’re getting our first look at Back to Black, the upcoming biopic on beloved late British soul singer Amy Winehouse.
Starring Marisa Abela (HBO’s “Industry”) as Winehouse, Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, and Eddie Marsan and Juliet Cowan as her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, the film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey).
“Back to Black is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black,” reads the logline. “Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
“I don’t write music to be famous,” Abela as Winehouse denotes in the trailer. “I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t.”
Back to Black will serve as the first biopic on the superstar singer since her 2011 death from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27, however, there have been numerous documentaries made, including the 2021 BBC TV title, Reclaiming Amy, and the Oscar-winning 2015 documentary feature, Amy.
Back to Black will arrive in theaters on May 10.
