Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Dr. De Jesus moved to New York City as an infant, growing up in the vibrant community of “El Barrio” in Harlem. Raised in a bilingual environment, she embraced both Spanish and English languages, fostering a deep appreciation for her cultural roots. From a young age, Dr. De Jesus was captivated by science, driven by a fascination with the mechanisms and tools that shape medicine and patient outcomes.

Her academic journey began with a bachelor’s in biology, supplemented by a minor in sociology. She pursued further studies with a post-baccalaureate in biochemistry and microbiology, eventually earning a PhD in microbiology and immunology. After completing two post-doctoral fellowships in emerging infectious diseases (EID) and immunology, she landed a joint appointment from the New York State Department of Health and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, where she established her own research laboratory focused on developing prototype vaccines for oral delivery

 The Transition to Pfizer

Dr. De Jesus adapted the first two lesson plans in microbiology and immunology she had originally developed for the Rise High Program and provided the content to the Pfizer School of Science which serves underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in Schenectady, NY. Since its inception, the Pfizer School of Science has welcomed over 7,000 students.
