*Did you know that an American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds? Well, that is it, at least according to “Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.” You were probably unaware of that, but the fact that you don’t know about it doesn’t mean it is farfetched. And if it happens, it can happen to you, too.
Many of these assaults happen in private, and also in places where you feel safe and comfortable, like at home! Social environments such as bars, parties, and restaurants are also where you can unknowingly share a table with a sexual predator because they frequent such places too. The person you swipe right on in a dating app can also turn out to be a sexual predator who will roofie your drink when you two finally meet on a date.
“Roofie” is a slang derived from Rohypnol, a drug sometimes used for recreational purposes. It is commonly called a “rave drug,” though some people use it as a personal sleeping pill. For sexual predators, it is just what they need to lower your inhibitions and reduce your motor skills. So they will look for a chance to slip it into your drink.
“Roofie” has been popular in colleges. A survey found it is a problem in many college settings. If you are out of college, you might conclude you are safe. But, as we have pointed out, you can still be a sexual assault victim at a nightclub, bar, restaurant, or home. That is the reality of the world we live in. So as long as you are still in this world, you can take some steps to protect yourself from sex predators.

The following four devices can help you detect date rape drugs in your drink:
Forensic Pouches were developed for forensic use by law enforcement and use National Institute of Justice chemical reagents to detect several drugs, including GHB, fentanyl, LSD, and PCP.
To use, you just remove the swab from the pouch, and test the food you have misgivings about. If it is a beverage, dip the test in it. Take back the swab in the pouch and break up the chemical reagents provided into the pouch.
There will be a color reaction if your beverage is indeed spiked. You then use the app associated with it (MobileDetect app). Scan the pouch’s QR code with the app and get your automated drug report.
This product was created by someone who had been a victim of drink spiking. She has also teamed up with law enforcement in creating the What Now Campaign whose aim is to educate and empower women with the information they need to know if their drink has been spiked, and what to do after. They also learn what to do if an assault has occurred.
The testing kits are from Knope; they operate almost as COVID-19 tests. You place a few drops of the beverage in a small opening. There is a longer window where the results will show up. If you see three lines appearing on the long window, your drink is safe. Or rather, you are safe.
But if you see only two lines appearing, then the beverage is spiked.
These coasters test specifically for ketamine and GHB but not for roofies. Have these in your bag before you head to any place you suspect your drink could be spiked. They contain two testing zones. Take a drop of the drink and put it on one zone, smudging it over both the letters A and B.
If the spots turn blue instantly, your drink has been spiked with ketamine. The spots turn green if the drink has been spiked with GHB.
These stickers are not just discreet’ they are also easy to carry. They will detect GHB in your drink. One pack comes with six stickers. Each of the stickers has a protective film over it. Ensure you put one of the stickers on the back of your phone or a similar hard surface you’ll have with you if you’re going to an environment where you’d like to test your drink.
After getting your beverage, dip your finger in it. Thereafter, remove the protective film from the top of the sticker and press your alcohol-soaked finger against the sticker. You then wait for a minute. Should the sticker turns a darker color, your drink has been spiked.
