Just two months after giving birth to what they call their “miracle baby”, a Louisiana husband and wife have celebrated another feat.
Shunte and Korey Harrison graduated Saturday from Southern New Hampshire University, crossing the commencement stage together. Shunte Harrison earned her Associate of Science degree in criminal justice while her husband Korey Harrison earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration.
Coming this far was not easy as the couple had to overcome not only challenges with infertility but also natural disasters, illness, and deaths in the family, KLFY reported.
While struggling with infertility, Shunte and Korey Harrison went through an IVF treatment and they welcomed their first child on the same day Shunte Harrison became an official college graduate.
“It was two blessings in one,” Shunte Harrison told Southern New Hampshire University. She and her husband dedicated their academic achievements to their son.
“He’s a blessing and he brought blessings with him,” said Shunte Harrison. “I want him to be very proud and know that his parents did this for him.”
Being a first-generation college graduate, Shunte Harrison said she plans to use her criminal justice degree to help prevent underprivileged youth from being sent to prison.
Her husband Korey Harrison began working towards a degree back in 2005 but he put that on hold due to personal challenges. He was motivated to go back to college after seeing his wife’s efforts towards earning a degree.
“Just seeing how smooth it was for her inspired me to jump on in,” Korey Harrison said. “You’re like superwoman,” he said to his wife during the interview. “I can’t imagine doing this without you.”
