As the NFL Wild Card Weekend kicks off the chase for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, it’s the perfect time to highlight the significance of the NFL’s 105th season, especially the significance of the Black quarterback.
When you think of legendary quarterbacks, names like Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, Warren Moon, Steve McNair and Doug Williams come to mind. These men didn’t just play the game; they redefined it. Doug Williams not only led Washington (formerly known as the Redskins) to a Super Bowl victory in 1988 but also snagged the MVP honors, making history as the first Black quarterback to do so. These pioneers laid the groundwork for the dynamic stars we see today, transforming what was once considered an anomaly into the new norm.

Back in the day, a Black quarterback was seen as a rarity, a “black horse” in a predominantly white field. The idea of a quarterback who could both launch a 60-yard pass and sprint like an Olympic athlete was almost mythical. But these trailblazers shattered stereotypes and opened doors, proving that talent knows no color.
Fast forward to 2025, and the NFL landscape has changed dramatically. Out of 32 teams, 15 boast starting African American quarterbacks, with seven leading their teams into the playoffs. These athletes are not just participants; they’re contenders, each with a unique style of play and story.
