You can count Whoopi Goldberg out of the masses who think Barbie star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were snubbed by the academy for not being nominated for Best Actress and Best Director, respectively.
As the hosts of ABC’s “The View” discussed the recently announced Oscar nominations, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin echoed the dismay of fans that Robbie and Gerwig were not among the event’s nominees despite Barbie being the highest grossing film of 2023 with almost $1.5 billion in revenue worldwide.
“Like, ‘Hello, studios, maybe hire more female directors if you want to produce blockbusters,’ ” Farah Griffin said. “We’re half the population; we turn out, we want to see these.”
Noting that while Barbie included themes of feminism, Farah Griffin gave voice to the outcries of fans all over who point out the irony of the male lead (Ryan Gosling) receiving a nod, but not the female lead and female director.
“Did thy miss the whole moral of the story of Barbie?,” wondered Farah Griffin, however, Goldberg doesn’t see it quite that way.
“Here’s the deal: Everybody doesn’t win!,” Goldberg said.
“You know about the snubs … ” began co-host Sunny Hostin before Goldberg interjected, “Well, but they’re not snubs. And that’s what I want to sort of point out.”
“And it’s not the elites — it’s the entire family of the Academy who vote for Best Picture nominations,” the EGOT winner went on. “We all vote for Best Picture, everybody. So there are seven to ten nominations that happen, and you don’t get everything that you want to get.”
“There are no snubs, and that’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize,” Goldberg continued. “The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 96th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 10 from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
