*As a celebrity, Tony Gonzalez is no stranger to folks who are not what they seem to be asking for a hook-up.
But it turns out, Gonzalez has a legit relative in Whoopi Goldberg. According to People, the former Kansas City Chiefs tight end discovered he and “The View” co-host are of the same family earlier this month, courtesy of “Finding Your Roots’” Henry Louis Gates. Gates found and revealed to Gonzalez that he and Goldberg are “distant cousins,” with them sharing DNA on Gonzalez’s mom’s father’s side.
As fate would have it, the cousins met for the first time recently on “The View.” Gonzalez recently appeared on the daytime talk show to promote his role on Amazon Prime Video’s new film, “The Underdoggs.”
The Charles Stone III-directed sports comedy-drama, which premiered Jan. 26, stars Snoop Dogg as Jaycen “Two-J’s” Jennings, an arrogant former football player who is ordered to perform community service in his neighborhood after his involvement in a major car accident. Seeing an opportunity to rebuild his brand, Two-J’s coaches a struggling youth football team, whose roster includes the son of a former flame. Despite his initial rough treatment, the athlete connects with the team, inspiring its members to do better.
In addition to Snoop and Gonzalez, “The Underdoggs” features Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Kal Penn, Andrew Schulz, Kandi Burruss, and George Lopez.

Regarding Goldberg, Gonzalez labeled the discovery of his new cousin as “incredible.
“Oh my God. It was incredible,” he said about Gates’ revelation. “He does it at the end, like, ‘Every time on the show, we have somebody who’s related to other people. Would you like to see who it is? Turn the page.’ And I turn the page, and I saw it was you, I was like, ‘What the hell? Whoopi Goldberg? I love Whoopi, that’s so cool!’ ”
Digging into pair’s connection, Gates told Gonzalez that he and Goldberg were connected through George Betts, a slave on his grandfather’s side who became one of only 5% of slaves who bought the property after slavery was abolished, People noted.
“This guy was tough,” said Gonzalez about Betts. “And it’s just amazing. He was elected a major for a militia to protect Black people because a lot of White people weren’t happy that slavery was ended… This is just a strong man. This is who you’re related to, who I’m related to. A strong, stubborn person.”
Upon seeing Goldberg, it was all love, as Gonzalez called the 68-year-old EGOT winner, “Cousin Whoopi! Cousin Whoopi.” “That’s my blood right there,” Goldberg told the audience about her newfound cousin.
Witnessing the moment, fellow “View” co-hosts Sara Haines and Ana Navarro shared their thoughts.
“Now I want to go find my roots…” Haines quipped, while Navarro had a teasing vibe, saying, “I think this is probably the only cousin that could pop up that’s not going to wanna be in the will!”
In response, Gonzalez countered with a desire to be in Goldberg’s will while asking for a favor.
“I’ll be in the will. I’ll take that!” the 47-year-old sports commentator said. “Can I borrow $5?”

Goldberg had no problem supplying Gonzalez with the money. The kicker was the athlete found himself with a chance to honor a favor with a favor in helping the “Ghost” star secure a ticket for this year’s Super Bowl. The big game, featuring Gonzalez’s Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49’ers, is set to go down Feb. 11, with Usher on hand to headline the event’s halftime show.
“Julia Roberts was here, maybe a couple of weeks ago, and we were talking about the Super Bowl ’cause she wants to go. She says she’s never been,” Goldberg recalled, before hinting to Gonzalez, “And I said, ‘Well, maybe I could help you get in…’ ”
“I just want to say, it’s all great for Taylor Swift, but Julia Roberts is pretty hot too!” The “Sister Act” entertainer continued. “And I wondered, ’cause it’s in Vegas and I figure you might be going, you might be hanging, if you decide that you need a couple of people to go with you, maybe Julia and I would go with you.”
As family goes, the flavor was a no-brainer for Gonzalez, who welcomed Goldberg and Roberts, if the “Pretty Woman” star is game.
“I got you cousin. I got you, cousin,” he said. “You come with me as your guest, bring Julia too. The more the merrier.”
