WIDE ANGLE YOUTH MEDIA CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH A VIRTUAL OSCARS-THEMED NIGHT TO REMEMBER!
Throw on your slippers or dress to the nines, grab your popcorn, and enjoy films befitting the red carpet from the comfort of home!
BALTIMORE, October 10, 2020 – Wide Angle Youth Media will celebrate two decades of amplifying youth voice with a virtual, Oscars-style soiree on Saturday, November 14, from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. Our 20th Birthday will feature live screenings from our catalogue of youth videos, photography and design campaigns, remarks from alumni and guest speakers, and opportunities to network live with other guests. Community members, students, teachers, political leaders and organizations across Baltimore are invited to commemorate Wide Angle’s impact on Baltimore and help us kick off our next decade with a one of a kind event. Audience members can get their free tickets and vote for their favorite projects at the official event website: bit.ly/20th-bday.
“Just getting diversity is the bare minimum…Yes, we’re included but are we respected in that field? I think diversity is just step one. There’s still so much work to do once you start being inclusive and look at all the talent there is.” – Janae Young, youth event planner
Wide Angle students are designing and organizing an Oscars-inspired evening, and they’re flipping the script on the Academy. Our #WAYMiesInColor event will uplift diverse voices; feature WAYMie (whammy) Award winners for Best Comedy, Best Horror Film, Best Long Documentary, Best Graphic Design and Rising Filmmakers from our extensive youth media portfolio (with award winners selected by our community, not an exclusive closed door committee); and be accessible to all through free tickets and multiple ways to participate. Mark your calendar to join us on Saturday, November 14th, at 6:00 pm to enjoy a one of a kind, 100% virtual tribute to Wide Angle and Baltimore’s next generation of media makers. Curl up on your couch, shine the spotlight on talented media makers, and learn how to keep the conversation going.
“The events of this year have time and again underscored the significance of diverse representation – in our institutions, in policy making bodies, and particularly in the media production/communications industry. The need to share youth perspectives and create accessible professional pathways in the field is as relevant now as it was in 2000.” – Susan Malone, Executive Director
Special Thanks to our Platinum sponsor and long-time supporter, the Maryland Film Office, for helping to make this event possible.
